Standing as One

Tuesday night's game was game one of the Jimmy Fund series to strike out cancer and the sweetest thing happened that I have seen in a long time. There was an hour-long rain-delayed game allowing me to be there for all of the pregame festivities. Which meant that I was there for the national anthem. The entire stadium stood as the national anthem was sung. The singer was a cancer survivor and as a result, her voice was not as strong or in tune as it might have otherwise been. As she sang within seconds the entire crowd began singing with her. I have never witnessed such a wholesome and patriotic moment. The whole crowd was on their feet cheering and supporting her. In a world where unity, support, and kindness are generally lacking it was comforting to have sports do what sports does best. It was a pleasant and much-needed reminder of the good in the world. Much of today's news is filled with tragedies, wars, and the divided American people but in Fenway, even just for a few minutes, the stadium was united behind and for one woman. A beautiful and emotional site.
